The physical act of crucifixion is an act of almost incomprehensible brutality.

Here, the act of crucifixion is embodied by an object, an event, a movement and a sound; the striking of the solenoid against the bell. It is a solemn representation that is not intended to simplify but rather to create a space in which to fill with reflection.

The sound emanates from the bell and fills the void of the physical space and the silence of the mind.

The voice of Jesus, his thoughts and his prayers are heard.

Meditation

We look on from a distance:
a distance of time and space and culture,
a distance of a Sunday afternoon in Australia in Lent.
And for us it hurts to watch Jesus dying,
even at a distance.
It hurts to know that we are being rescued.
It hurts to know how much we are valued and loved.

Reading

It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified Him, the people stayed there watching Him, the leaders jeered at Him and the soldiers mocked Him. Some women, His friends from Galilee, looked on at a distance.
