I was interested in the suggestion of physical labour and reflection on human failings inherent within this station. There is an acknowledgement of our fallibility in the fall but also a sense of celebration in being able to continue by way of a symbolic and transformative act. On the one hand this is a gift but at the same time a heavy weight to hold. These are the qualities reflected in my work.

The work is a covering taking the form of a chasuble and constructed from all the failed works, test pieces and remnants found in my studio to date. I wanted to give them status by honouring them as an important part of my practice and transform them through a symbolic gesture. The work has physical weight. It is a monument to time spent, a meditation on labour and a celebration of lessons learnt and the inherent potential for reformation through failure.

Meditation

I am finding it hard to watch you, Jesus,
to see you struggling,
to see you on the ground.
Into your silence I want to shout:
‘Why do they keep on hurting you?
What have you done wrong?

Reading

Ill-treated and afflicted,
He never said a word.
Like a lamb led to the slaughter house,
like a sheep dumb before its shearers,
He never opened His mouth.
